A map app for Marmalade Trust, developed with Scottish Tech Army, to help people find nearby community Christmas events. Marmalade Trust works to reduce loneliness, which can be especially difficult at Christmas. Events already happen across local communities, but their details are often spread across council pages, church newsletters, and Facebook groups.
The Problem
Community Christmas events are scattered across council pages, church newsletters, and local Facebook groups. If someone is isolated and doesn't know where to look, those events can be hard to find. The map brings listings together so people can see what's happening nearby.
My Role
I lead product design and project coordination across a three-person volunteer team, and work directly with Marmalade Trust. The project runs through Scottish Tech Army, so the design needs to fit the time and capacity available to the team.
Design considerations
The app uses React and Leaflet. The main design questions come from fitting map browsing and useful event details onto a phone screen.
- Map and details: the map helps people see what's nearby, while event details need enough space to scan.
- Event information: date, location, audience, and booking requirements help people decide whether an event suits them.
- Mobile layout: filters, the map, and the event list share limited screen space, so the hierarchy needs to stay clear.
